Coastal Cruising: Designing the Ultimate Beach-Ready SUV

There’s a specific kind of freedom that comes with driving an open-top SUV down PCH with the ocean on one side and the hills on the other. It’s the reason the Ford Bronco — particularly the open-air Outer Banks trim — has become one of the most sought-after platforms for beach-lifestyle builds in Southern California. It arrives from the factory already optimized for open-air enjoyment; the job of a great custom shop is to take it the rest of the way.

At Galpin Auto Sports, we’ve built a number of Bronco configurations specifically optimized for coastal California driving. Here’s what goes into designing the ultimate beach-ready SUV.

Start with the Right Platform

The Galpinized Ford Bronco Outer Banks is our reference point for coastal builds — a well-equipped Bronco with removable doors, removable roof panels, and a terrain-management system that handles the sand dunes of Pismo and the rocky canyon trails above Malibu equally well. The Outer Banks trim brings a comfort-oriented interior to the rugged Bronco platform, making it genuinely livable as a daily driver while remaining fully capable off the pavement.

We’ve also built several other Bronco variants you can explore for inspiration in our Galpinized gallery, including the Bronco TrailRax, the Bronco Orange KMC, and the Green Bronco Badlands build.

Protection Against the Coastal Environment

Salt air, sand, and UV exposure are the enemies of a coastal vehicle. A beach build needs to address these forces proactively:

  • Vehicle wrap or paint protection film — a full PPF installation protects your paint from UV fading and fine-grit sand abrasion. A wrap can also transform the aesthetic to something that suits the coastal vibe.  See our post on vehicle wraps vs paint for a detailed breakdown.
  • Underbody coating — a quality rubberized coating protects frame rails, floor pans, and suspension components from salt-accelerated corrosion.
  • Stainless hardware upgrades — replacing exposed bolts and brackets with stainless alternatives is a detail-oriented touch that pays off over years of coastal exposure.

Open-Air Optimization

The removable-door, removable-top configuration is the heart of any Bronco beach build. To make the most of it:

  • Door storage bags — padded, weather-resistant bags that protect removed doors during storage and make swapping in the field practical rather than just theoretical.
  • Soft top vs. hard top considerations — a premium Bestop or OEM modular hard top gives you the flexibility to quickly reconfigure the roof for whatever the weather demands.

Wind deflectors — for highway driving with the doors off, windscreen deflectors reduce cabin turbulence and make extended open-air cruising actually comfortable.

Wheels, Tires, and Lift

A coastal build benefits from a mild lift — 2″ to 3″ — paired with quality all-terrain tires. You want enough ground clearance to confidently navigate beach access roads and soft sand without sacrificing the daily drivability that makes a beach build actually useful.

Wheel selection for a coastal build should balance aesthetics and function. Matte or satin finishes hide salt residue better than polished surfaces. Our wheels and tires team can walk you through sizing, offset, and finish options that suit the Bronco platform.

Interior: Built for the Beach Lifestyle

Sand gets everywhere. A beach-optimized interior takes this seriously: all-weather floor liners, marine-grade seat upholstery or easy-clean vinyl, and drain plugs in the floor (a Bronco factory feature worth keeping). Waterproof seat covers protect the upholstery during wet days or post-surf sessions.

Our interiors team specializes in custom upholstery that combines durability with the premium look and feel you’d expect from a Galpin build. See our post on luxury custom interior upgrades for ideas on what’s possible.

Audio: Soundtrack Your Coastal Drive

An open-air Bronco needs serious audio power to overcome wind noise at speed. Marine-rated speakers, an amplifier, and a quality head unit designed to handle outdoor exposure give you the soundtrack to match the scenery. See the post on custom audio upgrades for summer cruising for a breakdown of what’s worth the investment.
